The Breed

English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a flushing and retrieving gundog. Height at withers should be about 51 cms, and the weight some 20 - 25 kgs. The colour is liver & white, black & white, or any of these with tan markings.

The original standard states ”happy and friendly of disposition”, and above all this characterizes the springer’s temperament. He will grow some coat, and you must take into account time for regular grooming with comb, brush and scissors.

The English Springer Spaniel is originally a gundog, but most of them are now kept as family pets, and seem to settle well as such. He is very fond of human company, and craves his family's attention. Notice that the breed requires a certain amount of regular exercise and activity in order to thrive. The best sort of exercise is running free in the fields.

One of the most important qualities of the breed is the natural ability to hunt within reach of the gun, which is no further than 20 - 30 meters. This quality should be carefully nurtured. If you manage this, you will be blessed with a dog staying close to you when exercising off the lead.

The English Springer Spaniel is very versatile. In Norway today there are springers trained as sniffer dogs for drugs, bombs, locating people victims of avalanches or earthquakes, finding mushrooms, tracking wounded deer and, of course, as true gundogs. You will soon realize that the only limit for what you can teach your springer is your own imagination.

Approximately 200 English Springer Spaniel puppies are registered yearly in Norway. The equivalent in Sweden is more than a thousand, and in Great Britain some ten thousands.
